When winter rolls in and everything outside starts to sparkle, I love curling up inside with a fun little project. There’s something magical about making your own decorations — especially when they look like they’ve fallen straight from a snowy sky.
These felt snowflake ornaments are a perfect place to start. They’re quick, beginner-friendly, and don’t need any fancy tools. Plus, no two snowflakes ever look the same, so each one you make will have its own little personality.
In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to turn a simple stick-and-stitch snowflake patch into a festive felt bauble. Mix up your colours, try out different stitches, and before you know it, you’ll have a flurry of handmade snowflakes ready to deck the halls.
What you need:
Felt (any colour)
Threads (any colour)
Needle
Scissors
Snowflake decoration stick and stitch patch (available on my Etsy shop)
Wadding
How to do it:
First peel the backing off your stick and stitch patch and stick it on your felt. Press it firmly to make sure it is well stuck down.

Cut roughly around the edge of the bauble shape - you will trim it to the dashed cut line later. This is just to make it easier to handle while you're doing the embroidery stitches.

Using 2 strands of embroidery thread, sew back stitch over the lines of the snowflake.

When you've finished the embroidery stitches, trim the decoration along the dashed cut lines

Now it's time to dissolve away the stick and stitch patch! Put it in some lukewarm water and leave it for 5 to 10 minutes.
Shake the fabric in the water to remove any loose bits of paper, then give it one more rinse and leave it somewhere to dry.

When it's dry, cut out a circle the same size from felt, and another circle which is slightly smaller from some wadding.
Stack them on top of each other to make a wadding sandwich.

Sew them together using blanket stitch around the edges.

Finally, attach some thread so you can hang it up.
And there you have it! Your very own snowflake Christmas decoration 🙂
