DIY Halloween Trick-or-Treat Tote Bag with Stick & Stitch Embroidery

What you'll need

• Plain cotton tote bag

• Embroidery thread in your chosen colours

• Embroidery needle

• Small embroidery scissors

• Warm water

Step 1: Choose your Halloween designs

Before removing the backing, place the patches on your bag to experiment with different arrangements.

Step 2: Peel and stick

Once you're happy with your design, peel the backing paper from each patch and press it firmly onto the tote bag.

The patches work just like stickers, making them incredibly easy to position and keeping your design in place while you stitch.

Step 3: Stitch over the design

Now for the fun part! Stitch directly over the printed design using your favourite embroidery stitches.

Back stitch is perfect for outlines, satin stitch works beautifully for filled shapes, and French knots are great for adding little decorative details.

Because the design is printed onto a water-soluble stabiliser, you don't need to worry about the patch itself – it will disappear once you've finished stitching.

Step 4: Dissolve the patch away

Once you've completed your embroidery, soak the stitched area in warm water for a few minutes.

The Stick & Stitch patch will gently dissolve, leaving behind only your embroidery. Give the fabric a gentle rub if needed and rinse until all of the stabiliser has disappeared.

Leave the tote bag to dry flat before using it.
